Looking After Your Roof

The roof of your home is basically a protective shield to keep water out and heat in. We tend to take this for granted until issues arise but taking simple preventative measures can save expensive repair bills. Use the guide below to give your roof a quick check:

INSPECT FOR DAMAGE: Regularly inspect you roof for noticable damage such as cracked or missing tiles, looses shingles or damaged flashing. Look for any signs of water leaks or moisture penetration on internal ceilings as these early signs can lead to more serious issues if left unaddressed.

CLEAN GUTTERS & DOWNPIPES: Clogged gutters and downpipes can cause water to overflow and damage your roof. Clean them out regularly to remove debris such as leaves and dirt.

TRIM OVERHANGING BRANCHES: Overhanging branches from nearby trees can cause damage to your roof, especially during storms and high winds. Trim back such branches to prevent them scraping or falling onto the roof surface. Also be mindfull of any climbers such as ivy which may be working their way from below.

CHECK FOR MOSS / ALGAE GROWTH: In damp and shaded areas, moss and algae can grow on your roof – this can lead to water retention and associated damage. Regularly check for signs of such growth.

INSULATE AND VENTILATE: Proper insulation and ventilation are crucial for maintaining the integrity of your roof covering. Ensure that any attic space is properly insulated to prevent heat loss and there is adequate ventilation to allow airflow.

ADDRESS LEAKS PROMPTLY: If you notice any signs of a leak, such as water stains on ceilings or walls, addess it immediately. Locate the source and repair it. Delaying repairs in tje short term can lead to larger problems (and larger costs!) later down the line.
