Reclaimed Cotswold Stone

A well-built stone wall is more than just a structure – it is a piece of heritage.  The Cotswolds abundant limestone, ranging from warm and honey hues in the North, to the paler tones of Bath stone in the South, defines the architectural identity of the area. Whether it’s the winding dry-stone boundaries that trace the Cotswold landscape or the carefully coursed masonry of period homes and farm buildings, stonework has shaped the character of our region for centuries.

Reclaimed stone plays a vital role in  restoring historic buildings, extending period properties and constructing new buildings that are sympathetic to their surroundings.  Weathered by time and use, each piece carries unique textures, softened edges, and a richness of colour which is hard to replicate.

Working with reclaimed stone demands skill and patience. Each piece arrives with its own shape, depth, and character, so stonemasons sort and hand-select stones individually. The aim is always to preserve the original face—the part of the stone that tells its story—while shaping it just enough to fit securely into the wall. When required, stones are gently “backed off” to achieve the correct depth for modern cavity walls, allowing traditional materials to meet contemporary building standards without compromising heritage.

Cotswold stone walls are traditionally laid in courses of similar height, with occasional larger “jumper” stones integrated to strengthen the structure and enhance visual rhythm. Corners are typically defined using quoins—large, rectangular stones that provide both structural stability and a crisp architectural outline.

These methods require an experienced eye for proportion, colour, and alignment. Stonemasons read each stone, working with its natural form rather than forcing it into uniformity. It is this careful, craftsman-led approach that gives Cotswold buildings their unmistakable charm.
