FOCUS ON……Fireplaces
Fireplaces have long been a cherished home feature providing warmth, comfort and a gathering place for families. With their rich heritage and evolving design, fireplaces have become more than just a source of heat – they are a symbol of coziness and charm.
Fireplaces trace back to ancient times when humans discovered the power and benefits of controlling fire. Initially, fire was placed in open pits within dwellings but, as civilizations advanced, so did the design and purpose of fireplaces.
During the Middle Ages, firpelaces became a central feature in castles and manor houses. Stone or brick structures were built to contain the fire and direct the smoke out through a chimney. These grand fireplaces were not only functional but also served as a status symbol, displaying the wealth and social standing of the household.
The Renaissance period brought about a renewed interest in Classical architecture, inspiring the design of fireplaces. Elaborate mantlepieces adorned with intricate carvings and decorative elements became popular, adding a touch of elegance to these essential household fixtures. As time progressed, fireplaces evolved to incorporate more efficient heating systems such as cast iron inserts and strong design elements such as tiled surrounds.
